She retired from elite competition in 2009.She won 10 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships at various distances and competed on the USA Swimming National Team for 12 years.She won a gold medal in the 5 km team event at the 1998 FINA World Swimming Championships in Perth, Australia together with John Flanagan and Austin Ramirez with a cumulative time of 2:52:12.2.She burst onto the international open water swimming scene in 1998 by winning the 5 km FINA World Championships in Perth, Australia in 59:23.5.2 USA Swimming Open Water Swimming Safety Task Force.
